Episode 30 - The Legend of Barney Thomson (2015)
Thursday Sep 09, 2021
Thursday Sep 09, 2021
We’ve had a short back and sides on The Swally this week as we discuss the 2015 film ‘The Legend of Barney Thomson’. Starring Robert Carlyle in his directorial debut and based on the 1999 book ‘The Long Midnight of Barney Thomson’ by author Douglas Lindsay.
Also starring Emma Thompson and Ray Winstone, set in Glasgow, the film centres around 50-year-old Barney Thomson, who works at Henderson's Barbers in Bridgeton and lives a life of desperate mediocrity. Barney's uninteresting life is turned upside down when he enters the grotesque and comically absurd world of a serial killer after accidentally killing his boss Wullie.
We also discuss the untold pleasures of a pint of Tennent’s Lager, food tattoos, find the Scottish version of Flipper, hear about an interesting Pot Noodle alibi and ponder a VHS revival.

Baird, Filth tells the story of Bruce Robertson. A corrupt, junkie cop with bipolar disorder attempting to manipulate his way through a promotion in order to win back his wife and daughter while also fighting his own inner demons.
Starring James McAvoy, Jamie Bell, Eddie Marsan and Imogen Poots, same rules apply in this episode.
We also get an update on the Shang-A-Lang story, hear about a topless grandad, how to order drugs to your rented holiday home, meet a very sweary nurse and discover what happens when your viagra kicks in too early.

We also look at what would happen if Rangers legend Ally McCoist assumed the role of a Celtic legend in a movie starring Academy Award winner Robert Duvall and Batman. A Shot At Glory.
Released in 2002, the film tells the story of scrappy lower-league Scottish football club Kilnockie and their Cinderella run in the Scottish Cup. We discuss accents, how good the football is and Ally McCoist in a sex scene!
